Matthew sets new Sri Lanka record

Matthew Abeysinghe of Killer Whale Aquatics set a new Sri Lanka record and the South Asian Games record as he clocked 51.78 seconds to win the gold medal in the 100m freestlye event on the second day of the National Aquatic Championship worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.
The 17-year-old Abeysinghe clocked 51.78 seconds to break the Sri Lanka record of 52.26 set by India’s Viru Khade, who won the Gold medal in the 2006 South Asian Games in Colombo.
Abeysnghe is the current national record holder for the 100m freestyle event when he established it winning the bronze medal at the recently concluded Asian Youth Games China. He timed 51.52 in his pet event at Nanjing meet to set the national record but failed to better that time yesterday.
Killwer Whale Aquatic’s Kimiko Raheem won the gold medal of the women’s 50 metre backstroke event clocking 31.14 seconds. SJ
